MY OLD MAN

The style of mi abuelo through a queer lens. Bringing you childhood memory realness with a political and critical twist. Let's talk about what's in your closet, how it got there, and what's on your shopping list.

DIY jewelry!! I went digging into our toolbox the other day and found a gold hinge that I thought might make some interesting jewelry. I’ve been pretty low on cash lately so what better way to get some new accessories then by using random stuff around your home! I created the geometric necklace by pulling an old beaded necklace through the loops of the gold hinge(after I removed the nail). I used that same gold nail I removed to hold together the faux leather burgundy cuff that I bought recently(but keeps falling apart) which, I think, creates a much more interesting cuff bracelet. Before I had a bunch of random stuff that was lying around my house and now I have two new accessory pieces! Some creativity can go a long way, doods!

Summer fashion collage

Summer has finally (fully) rolled around in NYC and it’s HOTHOT! I accidentally went out the other day in a sweater and blazer (because I didn’t check the weather before I left the house) and I was a sweaty mess! I quickly realized that I have a very limited number of summer clothing and that I need to figure out what my “clothing theme” for the summer is going to be. Having a “clothing theme” generally helps with feelings of laziness induced by suffocating heat or excessive perspiration. It just makes it easier to throw something on, leave the house, and get some ice cream! I’m still thinking through what exactly my “clothing theme” will be this summer but I’ve decided to create a collage/list of random pictures below to share with everyone some of the clothing inspirations/summer wear that I will be or want to be wearing this summer. Here goes….presenting Ro’s Lazy Wear Summer 2011!

Turtle’s back!

Hello Hello!

I’ve clearly not been posting too frequently on this blog but I promise that will all change very soon! I want to re-committ myself to this project by actually doing what I initially set out to do. So you can look forward to reading more one on one interviews of stylish old brown men, more personal narratives about my grandpa, random clothing/accessory posts, and submissions from other people! I’m most excited to begin to receive submissions because one of the goals of this project is to cultivate community through the exchange of stories. Please keep a look out for a call for submissions and be sure to disseminate it widely!

For now, I’m leaving you with this picture of a turtle ring I bought today from a street vendor. I initially was going to buy a tiger ring but then I thought to myself, “who am I kidding? you ARE a turtle”. So I bought the turtle ring because I felt that it relayed a more honest message about my personal style. I’m one who believes that we must always push ourselves forward, sometimes to uncomfortable lengths, in order to learn and grow. But in this process we must also hold our truths, the ones that are unwavering and make up our foundation. Even though I totally loved the ferociousness of the tiger ring I saw, buying the turtle ring was more aligned with my truth. And who said turtles can’t be fierce anyways?
